What the data shows

Enrollment is large, geographically uneven, and changing

The national public-school system still serves roughly 49 million students, but enrollment has not returned to the 2019 level. NCES also shows that the direction of change differs substantially by state, making state-level comparisons more useful than a national total alone.

NCES publishes enrollment, schools, districts, teachers, and pupil/teacher ratios through its Common Core of Data, giving this product a durable annual data pipeline for future state rankings and trend expansion.

Methodology & sources

About these figures

Current system counts come from the NCES Common Core of Data 2024–25 state summary. Historical enrollment and grade-level figures come from the NCES Condition of Education 2025, which reports fall 2023 actual enrollment and comparisons with 2019 and 2013. Different NCES products and reference periods are labeled separately rather than merged into one series.
